Bouchie Lake Pioneer Family Recognition Project

Remembrance Day Plaque Project – Part of the Bouchie Lake Century Family Recognition Project

We are excited to be moving forward with the installation of a plaque(s) honouring those who served Canada from our community on the cairn at the park located at Six Mile Corner (junction of Blackwater Road / Nazko Road).  This project is part of the Bouchie Lake Century Family Recognition Project.

In 2020, the first Remembrance Day Ceremony was held at Six Mile Corner at the site of the “Bouchie – Milburn Park”. We were in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic and the Remembrance Day Ceremony was not held at the Cenotaph in Quesnel. Some residents of Bouchie Lake – Milburn Lake saw it as an opportunity to come together and host a Remembrance Day ceremony with a theme of 6′ apart. Since then, community members have gathered at the park every November 11th to honour those who served Canada. A wreath is laid, songs are sung, pipes are played, a moment of silence is held, a bell is rung, and several readings are done. All by community members in a circle. The event is both participatory and inclusive. In 2023, over 30 people were present. While there is a cairn on-site, the cairn is blank. Every year, those present ask the question “Why is there no plaque?” This year, the Friends of Bouchie – Milburn are going to rectify this and need your help to make it happen. The inscription on the plaque will read something to this effect: “To Honour the men and women from the Communities of Bouchie Lake and Milburn Lake who served in the defense of Canada. Lest we Forget”. The plaque will also include some pictorials that are appropriate to our community (e.g. coniferous trees, poppies, rolling hills, wildlife, etc.).  The plaque will be cast bronze and is being manufactured by a foundry. We are hoping to have the plaque installed and unveiled for the 2024 Remembrance Day.
